Key Takeaways:

  • Texas residents have filed a lawsuit against Marathon Digital, citing excessive noise from a nearby Bitcoin mining facility as a “nuisance” causing health issues.
  • Plaintiffs claim noise from the mine has led to headaches, fatigue, and worsened pre-existing conditions, also affecting property values and electricity costs.
  • The lawsuit seeks noise mitigation or a shutdown of the facility, along with compensation for damages and court costs.

A group of Granbury, Texas, residents has filed a lawsuit against Marathon Digital, alleging excessive noise from its nearby Bitcoin mining facility.

Over two dozen residents claim the noise and vibrations from the cryptomining operation cause significant disturbances, including health issues such as fatigue, headaches, memory loss, and worsened pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure.

The plaintiffs argue that even within their homes, the noise disrupts their daily lives and interferes with their enjoyment of their properties.

They also link the mining facility to rising electricity costs and declining property values.

The lawsuit, filed on October 4, 2023, seeks a permanent injunction to stop the excessive noise or shut down the operation entirely, as well as compensation for damages.

The site, originally built in 2022, has changed operators multiple times, with Marathon taking over in January 2023.

Marathon has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

This case mirrors a similar situation in Norway, where residents successfully shut down a Bitcoin mine in 2022 due to noise complaints.
